Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga had one of the best starts of the year. In fact, it’s already the second best-selling game in the US in 2022 behind only Elden Ring. Much of that is due to its appeal to families and its availability on Nintendo Switch, where the game did particularly well.
“Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was the best-selling game of the month across Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox and Steam platforms,” said NPD Group games analyst Mat Piscatella. “It had the highest dollar sales in launch month for any LEGO title in history, and after one month it ranks among the top 6 selling LEGO games to date.”
It’s also the first non-Nintendo game since Monster Hunter: Rise in March 2021 to finish a #1 month on the Switch sales chart. And that tells the story of what’s going on with this game. It hits on its broad appeal.
This Lego Star Wars has found an audience on new-gen consoles, on Steam, and on Nintendo Switch. The latter is crucial because the family public has significant purchasing power. This is what puts Mario Kart 8 in the top 10 best-selling games every month.
The game is so successful that it has already surpassed Pokémon Legends: Arceus (physical only) and Horizon: Forbidden West since the start of the year. Of course, these games are exclusive to the platform. But that didn’t stop them from surpassing games like Dying Light 2.
The Skywalker Saga should also have strong legs as families seek to pick it up over the holidays. Now the question is whether this success is enough to allow Warner Bros., Traveler’s Tales and Disney to develop a sequel.
