Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff has been an integral part of the MCU’s Phase 4 so far, with the character eventually transitioning to the Scarlet Witch in Wanda Vision before making his terrifying return to the big screen Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While the Infinity Saga and Wanda Vision Already introduced Wanda’s backstory, it still lacks details about the character’s past, like her real parents.
In Marvel Comics, Wanda is Magneto’s daughter. However, since the MCU has yet to properly introduce the X-Men and specifically Magneto, details about Olsen’s true Scarlet Witch legacy are still being kept under wraps. Despite this, the actress expressed her desire to get involved when the franchise finally introduced the superteam.
Now, the MCU veteran has opened up about the possibility of seeing Magneto in the future of the franchise.
Ian McKellen responds to Elizabeth Olsen’s comments
Elizabeth Olsen sat down with Geek Culture to talk all things Wanda Maximoff and her dream pick for the actor who could play the MCU’s Magneto.
Asked about her choice between Sir Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender to portray Wanda’s on-screen father, Magneto, Olsen chose the original x-men star, admitting that she “had the biggest crush on him:”
Geek Culture: “If you had the choice, who would be your favorite dad? Could it be Sir Ian McKellan or Michael Fassbender?
Olson: “Oh… [laughs] I’ll go with Sir Ian McKellen. I had the biggest crush on him. He’s in these videos called Playing Shakespeare where the actors get together and do a Shakespeare… It’s a series of videos. He’s like the sexiest man alive, so I would say Sir Ian McKellen.”
McKellen responded to Olsen’s comment via a Facebook post, saying it would be “a treat to be his daddy:”
“If I had a daughter, I hope she would be like Elizabeth. A treat to be his dad!
When will Magneto make his MCU debut?
Ian McKellen delivered a compelling performance as Magneto through a plethora of x-men movies, as his version is one of the most recognizable portrayals for fans. The fact that Elizabeth Olsen chose the veteran actor over Michael Fassbender shows she grew up watching the original x-men trilogy, which adds to his admission that the actor is his celebrity crush.
It’s unclear if McKellen will follow in the footsteps of his x-men co-star Patrick Stewart in a potential Marvel return, but anything is possible now that the MCU is exploring the multiverse. The actor’s response might just be a fun nod to the choice of actress, but it could also serve as a cue for Marvel Studios to explore the idea of his possible comeback.
Chances are the MCU will find a new actor to play Magneto, but there could be ways to pay homage to McKellen. In the vast multiverse, it’s likely there’s an alternate universe where McKellen’s Magneto is the father of Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff.
Either way, this exchange between the two notable Marvel stars is an important interaction that would please MCU fans everywhere.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters around the world.
